The 2017 Mitsubishi ASX 2.0 petrol XLS is a compact SUV that strikes a balance between urban practicality and a bit of off-road capability. Here's a personal take on what makes this vehicle stand out and where it might fall short:
The 2.0-liter petrol engine in the ASX delivers a modest 110 kW of power, which is adequate for city driving and light highway use. It's not the most powerful engine in its class, but it gets the job done without fuss. The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) offers smooth acceleration, though it can feel a bit droney under heavy throttle. Handling is predictable, with light steering making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces, but it lacks the sharpness of some competitors.
The XLS trim adds a few extra comforts, including leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof, which give the interior a more premium feel. The seats are comfortable enough for short to medium drives, though longer trips might expose some limitations in support. The cabin is spacious, especially in the front, with decent legroom in the rear. The driving position is high, giving a commanding view of the road, which many SUV buyers appreciate.
For a 2017 model, the ASX XLS comes well-equipped with features like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which includes navigation, DAB radio, and smartphone connectivity. The interface is straightforward, though it might feel a bit dated compared to newer models. Safety features like reversing camera, rear parking sensors, and seven airbags add to the overall package, making it a relatively safe choice in its class.
One of the ASX's strengths is its practicality. The 393-liter boot is decent for a compact SUV and can expand to 1,193 liters with the rear seats folded. This makes it suitable for small families or those who need a bit of extra space for shopping trips or weekend getaways. The rear seats are easy to fold, though they don’t lie completely flat.
The 2.0-liter engine is reasonably efficient, with a combined fuel consumption of around 7.6 L/100 km. This is competitive for its class, though not class-leading. It's a good option for those who prioritize fuel economy but don't want to sacrifice too much power.
